Low Moor Footbridge, Clitheroe

Location: Clitheroe, Lancashire
Client: Lancashire County Council
Client’s Project Manager: Lancashire County Council
Value: £50,000
Timescale: September 2007
Scope: The demolition of a single span arched concrete footbridge over the River Ribble

Bridge Construction

The bridge was a 27m long reinforced concrete footbridge deck with reinforced concrete thrust blocks at each end of the bridge, spanning the River Ribble in Clitheroe.

Demolition Methodology

After careful consideration of various methods for the demolition, the most favourable plan was as follows.

The work was scheduled for a dry weather spell when the river would be running low within the forthcoming weeks. A “protection deck” consisting of heavy duty timber mats and concrete bollards was placed directly beneath the bridge. Our long reach excavator then proceeded to demolish the bridge in sections, allowing them to drop on to the crash deck, at which point the pieces were lifted off using a mobile crane. Once the crash deck had been removed, the river was dredged using the bucket of the long reach excavator to remove any stray demolition materials.
