Scope:The asbestos removal, soft-strip, demolition and site clearance of a 7-storey office building in Manchester with underground car park.
Project Background
The project consisted of the demolition of a 100m long 7-storey office block with underground car park and basement surrounded on all sides by busy city centre streets, office blocks and a construction site directly adjacent to one end.
Demolition Methodology
The building was fully scaffolded and small plant lifted on to the roof with a mobile crane. The building was then deconstructed floor by floor using remote Brokk breakers as well as mini-diggers, depositing demolition arisings down the lift shaft for removal by Bobcat at the bottom. Once the ends of the building had been reduced greatly in height, the scaffolding was removed and the remainder of the building was demolished using a long reach demolition excavator. The basement was excavated and the building arisings were crushed on site to 6F2 and used to backfill the void. Extreme care was required during excavation due to the proximity of underground utility cables and other obstructions.
